Partners currently conducting weekend backpack programs:
Community Food Bank of Central Alabama
is helping to provide discounted food to support the numerous Weekenders Backpack Programs. During the 2013-14
school year, the food bank helped to feed 1,100 students in 25 different schools.
The Green Valley Food Bank Ministries began in 1989 as an agency of United Way and is now an agency of Community Food
Bank of Central Alabama. We serve the needs of those less fortunate in the Hoover zip-code related areas. Families are
assisted through the Food Bank and Clothes Closet on a monthly basis. Supplemental ministries are a Furniture Hut, Santa
Shoppe, Hair Salon, Backpack (school supplies), and a summertime Kiddie Bag for children. Approximately 125 volunteers
from Green Valley and other denominations work to carry out our mission as stated in Matthew 25:35-40
Bluff Park United Methodist Church
Bluff Park United Methodist Church is currently serving 3 elementary schools in our community which are Bluff Park, Shades Mountain, and Gwin.
Riverchase United Methodist Church
Riverchase United Methodist Church has expanded their support to include weekend backpack programs for Riverchase Elementary, Rocky Ridge Elementary
and Berry Middle. Riverchase will have food delivered directly from the Central Alabama Food Bank to the church.
Church members will build the bags at the church on the first Wednesday night of each month at
5:00pm. Volunteers will deliver the food for distribution on Fridays.
Hunter Street Baptist Church
Hunter Street Baptist Church is helping to create weekend backpack programs at two schools. They are feeding children at one elementary school
and one intermediate school immediately. This excellent initiative was created by one of Hoover’s counselors and
by one of our teachers. South Shades Crest elementary, Gwin elementary, Trace Crossings elementary and Brock’s Gap Intermediate are currently being supported
by Hunter Street.
The Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles and Discovery United Methodist
are now sponsoring Trace Crossings Elementary.
Meadow Brook Baptist Church supports Greystone Elementary School.
Cross Creek Church and The Church at Ross Bridge
are partnering to support the children at Deer Valley Elementary School.
Prince of Peace Catholic Parish
Prince of Peace Catholic Parish is now supporting Simmons Middle School. Their program is scheduled to begin
March 1st, 2016 and is the first program established at one of our middle schools. Thank you for your support of
some of our older children.
Shades Mountain Baptist Church
Shades Mountain Baptist Church is supporting a feeding initiative at Bumpus Middle School and Shades Mountain Elementary School.
Shades Crest Baptist Church supports Bluff Park Elementary School.
